What is a DESS Plug and Why Does Your Can-Am Need One?
If you've upgraded your Can-Am X3 or Maverick R with a Switch-Pros system or relocated the factory DESS (Digitally Encoded Security System) key module, you're left with an empty hole in your console. It's functional, sure — but it looks unfinished. That's exactly what our Can-Am DESS Block Off Plug is designed to fix.
What is a DESS Plug?
DESS stands for Digitally Encoded Security System — it's the factory security key system used on Can-Am vehicles. The DESS module sits in the console and requires a specially encoded key lanyard to start the vehicle. The DESS system cannot be removed without extensive ECM reprogramming or a complete ECM swap, and it must always be mounted in plastic — never metal or carbon fiber. Most builders relocate the DESS key to a more convenient or hidden location, leaving the original console port open. A DESS block off plug fills that opening cleanly.
Our plug is precision-machined from aircraft-grade 6061-T6 billet aluminum, so instead of an empty hole or a cheap plastic cap, you get a finished, professional-looking piece that matches the quality of the rest of your build.
Why Billet Aluminum Instead of Plastic?
The factory console area takes a beating — UV exposure, vibration, gloved hands, and the occasional drink spill. Plastic caps crack, fade, and rattle. Our billet aluminum plug is machined to fit precisely, won't flex or rattle, and withstands the same abuse your machine takes on the trail.
It's also just better looking. The machined finish complements other billet accessories on your build and signals that the details matter to you — because they do.
Who Needs a DESS Block Off Plug?
- Can-Am X3 owners (2017–2025) who have relocated the factory DESS module
- Can-Am Maverick R owners (2023–2025) who have relocated the factory DESS module
- Riders running Switch-Pros or other aftermarket ignition/start systems
- Anyone who wants a clean, finished console without exposed holes
- Builders who care about the details as much as the performance
Made in the USA
Like every Reed Made Speed product, the DESS Block Off Plug is made in the USA with US materials and tools. Machined from a solid billet of 6061-T6 aluminum right here domestically — not imported, not cast, not assembled from overseas blanks.
Easy Installation
Installation is straightforward — the plug is machined to fit the factory DESS opening on the Can-Am X3 and Maverick R consoles. No drilling, no modification, no guesswork. Hardware is included. Most installs take under 10 minutes.
Part of a Complete Build

Related Guides
- Can I completely remove the DESS system from my Can-Am?
- No. The DESS system cannot be removed without extensive ECM reprogramming or a complete ECM swap. It must remain present and functional in the vehicle to start it.
- What material must the DESS key be mounted in?
- Plastic only. The DESS module must always be mounted in plastic — never metal or carbon fiber. This is a hard requirement from Can-Am.
- Does the DESS block off plug fit both the X3 and Maverick R?
- The X3 DESS block off plug is machined for the X3 DESS port. The Maverick R uses a push start button rather than a DESS key — the Maverick R equivalent is the Push Start Button Plug, which is a separate part.
- How long does installation take?
- Most installs take under 10 minutes. The plug is machined to fit the factory opening — no drilling, no modification, hardware included.
- Is the DESS block off plug made in the USA?
- Yes. Like every Reed Made Speed product, it is CNC-machined from 6061-T6 billet aluminum in the USA with US materials and tools.
